« In my art practice I focus on issues such as cultural alienation and marginalization. Humor and irony are central in my language. »
Adel Abidin, who represented Finland at the 52nd Biennial of Venice, creates sweet-sour works in which he humorously enjoys his status as an exiled Iraqi in Scandinavia. His colourful and original works covering politics, fundamentalism, memories and religion have been exhibited at the White Box (New York), at the Mac/Val and in the Vuitton Area (Parisian region).
Manipulating sarcasm like a corrosive weapon against marginalisation, he provides a critical view of the information society's manipulation methods by twisting around its own codes. A monographic exhibit will be dedicated to him in Helsinki's Finnish Contemporary Art Museum KIASMA in 2010.
